Revered police leader helped launch Fight Crime: Invest in Kids
Fight Crime: Invest in Kids mourns the loss of Patrick V. Murphy, a former Police Commissioner of New York City, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Syracuse and a founder and long-serving member of our organization's board. Mr. Murphy died in Wilmington, N.C. at the age of 91.
He was one of the most accomplished and revered police leaders of the 20th Century, a developer of major law enforcement innovations and also a strong supporter of investing in America's children to reduce later crime.
"Making sure kids have access to Head Start and good schools and community centers is the right thing to do but is also the smart thing to do--it is in our self-interest," Murphy told The Los Angeles Times following the launch of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids in 1996.
In 1995, Mr. Murphy and a small group of other law enforcement leaders helped to launch Fight Crime: Invest in Kids. Our communities are safer and stronger because of his contributions in helping professionalize the field of police work and in developing a strong law enforcement voice for public policies and programs that give children the right start in life.
