District Attorney Richard McNally, Sheriff Jack Mahar named ‘Champions for Children’
TROY — Rensselaer County District Attorney Richard McNally and Sheriff Jack Mahar were recently honored for their efforts to steer children away from crime.
The men were each given a Champion for Children award last week by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, a non-profit organization comprised of police officials, prosecutors and crime victims to which they belong.
The organization aims to deter youth from criminality by advocating for funding of child abuse prevention, counseling for troubled teens and after-school programs, among other things, according to its website.
Troy Police John Tedesco is also a member of the group, and the local officials have participated in events in the past that included reading to Troy children.
McNally said he was in Albany Tuesday with representatives from the organization with the hope of securing funding in the upcoming state budget for programs to curb child abuse.
McNally joined the organization in 2008, the year he took office. He received his award at a conference of the state District Attorneys’ Association.
Mahar has been sheriff since 2003 and joined the non-profit the following year; his award was given at a conference of the Sheriffs’ Association.
