MASSENA, N.Y., (August 2, 2011)Massena Police Chief Timmy Currier accepted the Champion for Children Award from the anti-crime group Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, Tuesday night. The award recognized Chief Currier for his support for programs that help kids get the right start in life and also cut crime in the long run, including early childhood education and other interventions for at-risk children.
Chief Currier is a member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids New York, a statewide anti-crime group of nearly 300 police chiefs, sheriffs, prosecutors and violence survivors. He has been an active member with the group, participating in meetings with top New York State policymakers.
Fight Crime: Invest in Kids New York State Director Meredith Wiley praised Chief Currier for advocating for programs that help at-risk children reach their potential and steer clear of crime later in life.
Chief Currier knows that in addition to tough law enforcement, New York needs to support programs that help kids get the right start in life. We thank him for his service and for supporting programs that will make communities safer and prevent crime in the future.
The award presentation occurred during Massenas National Night Out hosted by the Massena Neighborhood Watch. The award was presented to Chief Currier by St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells and SUNY Potsdam Police Chief John Kaplan who are both also members of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids New York.
Sheriff Wells said that, Chief Currier is an example of a special kind of leadership. He is not from one of the big metropolitan areas yet he has demonstrated a continued commitment to being a powerful, statewide voice for prevention and at the same time he and his department work every day to meet the crime and public service needs of Massena.
Chief Currier has been a member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids since 2005.
