NEW YORK–Genesee County Sheriff Receives Award From Crime-Fighting Group

ALBANY, N.Y., (January 24, 2011)Genesee County Sheriff Gary Maha accepted the Champion for Children Award from the anti-crime group Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, Monday. The award recognized Sheriff Maha for his support for programs that help kids get the right start in life and also cut crime in the long run, including early childhood education and other interventions for at-risk children.
Sheriff Maha is a member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids New York, a statewide
anti-crime group of more than 300 police chiefs, sheriffs, district attorneys and violence survivors. He has been an active member with the group for more than 11 years, participating in meetings with top New York State policymakers.
Fight Crime: Invest in Kids New York State Director Meredith Wiley praised Sheriff Maha for advocating for programs that help at-risk children reach their potential and steer clear of crime later in life.
Sheriff Maha knows that in addition to tough law enforcement, New York needs to support programs that help kids get the right start in life. We thank him for his service and for supporting programs that will make communities safer and prevent crime in the future.
The award presentation occurred during the Winter Conference of the New York State Sheriffs Association. Ontario County Sheriff and Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Co-Chair Philip Povero presented the award to Maha. Sheriff Maha has been the elected sheriff of Genesee County since 1988 and a member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids since 1999.
