Legislative Activities



As part our campaign to advocate for proven crime prevention initiatives, members across New York State stood up for investing in services to help young, at-risk children.

I)  Members sent a sign-on letter thanking legislators for their support of the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) maternal, infant, and early childhood home visiting program last session.  They also asked that legislators continue to support the program this year and continue to invest $2.5 million in the NFP program.

II) Warren County Sheriff Bud York delivered testimony at the Joint Legislative Public Hearing on the 2012-2013 Executive Budget Proposal for Elementary and Secondary Education on January 23rd.  Sheriff York encouraged the legislature to support Governor Cuomo’s $384 million pre-k budget proposal and urged them to increase the pre-k budget by redistributing $53 million in already proposed funds. In addition, Sheriff York called on the legislature to fund QUALITYstarsNY, a quality rating and improvement system that would increase access to high-quality early learning across the state.

III) Rensselaer County District Attorney Richard McNally delivered testimony at the Joint Legislative Public Hearing on the 2012-2013 Executive Budget Proposal for Health on February 8th. D.A. McNally urged the legislature to add $5 million to the budget for the Nurse-Family Partnership program to help prevent child abuse and neglect.

IV) Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero submitted testimony at the Joint Legislative Public Hearing on the 2012-2013 Executive Budget Proposal for Human Services. Sheriff Povero encouraged the legislature to support Governor Cuomo’s $23.3 million Healthy Families New York budget proposal and urged them to fund QUALITYstarsNY, a quality rating and improvement system that would increase the quality of early learning environments across the state.
