Pre-k programs can reduce violence, crime
Sheriff James J. Campbell Letter on Pre-kindergarten
ALBANY, NY, June 22, 2006 Whatever the accuracy of school violence statistics,
any violence in our schools is too much.
As a sheriff in New York state and member of the anti-crime organization, Fight Crime: Invest
in Kids New York, I know one remedy is starting kids off right with pre-kindergarten programs
that dramatically reduce violence and crime.
Quality pre-kindergarten is proven to cut crime. At-risk children in one Michigan program
were five times more likely to commit later crimes that similar children left out of the
program.
Pre-K also teaches children valuable social and academic skills that will reduce minor and
serious behavior problems in the future.
Every school should be safe for our kids. Let's invest in kids early to prevent school violence and crime later.
