Wriggelsworth: House, Rogers must stop anti-crime cuts
LETTER by Gene Wriggelsworth, Ingham County sheriff and member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids
LANSING, Michigan, May 13, 2006 ...Next week, the U.S. congress is expected to vote on
the Bush administration's proposed budget, which includes significant cuts to investments in
kids that prevent crime.
If that budget passes, by 2011, one in five kids of working parents would lose access to
child care; one in seven would be locked out of Head Start classrooms; and one in 10 at-risk
students would be kicked out of after-school programs...
Our public officials can show true concern for fiscal responsibility by restoring the funding
because these interventions actually save money and cut crime.
