After-School Programs on Criminal and Gang Activity and Drug Use

Law Enforcement Leaders Say Prop. 49 After-School Program Legislation Needed To Prevent Juvenile Crime

On Wednesday, June 21, 2006, more than 350 California sheriffs, police chiefs, district attorneys, and victims of violence will release findings from a new poll of California teens, ages 12-17, showing the number of kids who are unsupervised after school, the impact of after-school programs on juvenile criminal behavior and drug use as well as teen attitudes on the importance of after-school programs. Law enforcement leaders will join with the Governor's office, state lawmakers, and teens to call for prompt enactment of pending legislation to implement Prop. 49 in order to prevent juvenile crime.

The new poll contains data on:

  • kids unsupervised after school
  • impact of after-school programs on criminal and gang activity & drug use
  • youth attitudes on importance of after-school programs

In conjunction with the Governor's Office, State Senators Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield) and Tom Torlakson (D-Antioch) and California teens, Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California will release a new poll of California teens showing the impact after-school programs have on criminal and gang activity and drug use during a press conference in the Governor's press room at the State Capitol (Rm 1190) in Sacramento. They will call for prompt enactment of legislation to implement Prop. 49 to fund after-school programs that help prevent juvenile crime.
